Now I'm just making a quick update after having seen the swiss premiere last night on my thoughts on the film, and two defining parts of it. Before I begin I'm just going to say I adored the movie as a film fan, but got really upset at the many modifications that PJ made as a Tolkien fan. I'll give a more detailled opinion later. Spoilers ahead.
Saruman and Elrond Kung-Fu
Okay this scene sums up everything that isn't just wrong with the Hobbit, but with the "Middle-Earth saga" in general. Don't you remember how much you loved that old man kung-fu in the fellowship ? It's back, and it's even more ridiculous. Gone are the days of subtle magic born of wisdom and lore, this isn't Tolkien's film it is a Hollywood blockbuster and see the 9 nazgûl turned into target dummies for Elrond and Saruman to swing at. I was furious beyond belief at the scene, yet laughing as Galadriel is turned into a dark queen, firing magical eye lasers at Sauron while the screen was having an acid trip. Honestly, everything that was wrong with the series in a 15 minute sequence. This will come back and bite PJ in the back of the arse.
The ending
This was what I dreaded the most, not that i hated the end of the Hobbit, as a matter of fact I loved it so much I was terrified of what was to come. BUT PJ pulled it off masterfully, with Thorin saying the "world would be a better place if more cared about home" speech and the Bilbo returning to a bag end being sacked by legions of Hobbits. All while in the background a beautiful score plays the film off. The ending honestly made up for all the faults of the film (in my eyes) but I will speak more about that later.
